Sarat Chandra Chattopadyaya (15 September 1876 – 16 January 1938) was veteran Bangla Novelist of India. His most popular bangla novels are Srikant, Devdas, pother Dabi, porinita and dozen of others. His most of novels were translated, filmed and gained popularity in many languages of the world. Most of his works deal with the lifestyle, tragedy and struggle of the village people and the contemporary social practices that prevailed in Bengal. He remains the most popular, translated and adapted Indian author of all time.He was born in Devanandpur West Bengal in 15 September 1876.

He came Bhagalpur more than two times. First time he came Bhagalpur, Bihar in 1984. He got his primary education here. His maternal grandfather was lived in Maniksarkar mahalla in Adampur, Bhagalpur. He was a landlord and one of the renowned figure of Bhagalpur. He admited Sarat Chandra Chattopadyaya in Durgacharan Balak Primary School in Admpur and Sarat took education there till class Sixth . Then he took admission in TNJ High School for his higher education. But in his childhood  Sarat Chandra Chattopadyaya was very mischivious and naughty boy. He gone for fishing on the bank of Ganges. Oftenly he disturbed his class teacher. So his discipline liking maternal grandfather annoyed with him and sent him Devanandpur with his father and mother. Some years ago he came Bhagalpur again. That time he wrote here his first short story Mandira. He was ginious but very shy. So his that story was published in the name of Surendra Nath Ganguli in a Bangla magazine in 1894. He was his maternal uncle. But he was his age group and educated in same class. Mandira, the first story of Sarat Chandra Chattopadyaya was liked and got famous Rabindra Nath Award. Hence he came in literary field. According to the grandson of Surendra nath Bandhopadhaya, maternal uncle and friend of Sarat Chandra Chattopadyaya Ujjwal Bandhopadhyaya and Santanu Bandhopadhaya Sarat Chandra Chattopadyaya was written here his most famous novel Devdas.

The most of charaters  of that novel was his friends and known to him here. Even Chandramukhi, the famous character of Devdas was from Bhagalpur and well known to Sarat.

He told that Chandramukhi was a pros and she was lived in a two storied building at Burhanath Chawk. In his popular mammoir of Sarat Chandra Chattopadyaya ” Awara Masiha ” famous writer was wrote that one night Sarat was went to her house for viewing her dance with his friend Raju.

The houe of the Chandramukhi alias Kalibai, a famous character of Devdas novel of Bangla novelist Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay which was situated at Burhanath Chawk in Bhagalpur, Bihar, India. Sarat Chandra oftenly visited there with his fast friend Raju. This building was ebolished in 2020-21 and a new multi storied building built at that place.
